Fishing

For the novice or enthusiast the opportunity for some of the best fishing in northern Australia can be found here. The Bullo River flows for 50 miles exclusively on the property providing the opportunity for fresh and tidal salt water fishing. The Bullo River then joins the Victoria River, one of the largest and most remote rivers in Australia and is the property’s eastern boundary. Whilst Bullo is famous for excellent Barramundi fishing there are also other species including Thread Fin Salmon, Jew Fish, Mangrove Jack and Black Bream.

We have two boats to get you to where the fish are biting. Of course you can fish from the river bank or, for an optional extra, you can travel by helicopter to some of the more remote fishing spots. The best time to fish at Bullo is during the run-off from the wet season, which is late March, early April. Alternatively in the build-up to the wet season, which is October & November. If a visit at those times is not suitable it does not matter as the fish bite at Bullo all year round.

With an area covering half a million acres, Bullo River is a vast, pristine cattle station steeped in Australian outback history. Made famous by renowned author, Sara Henderson, the property is now owned and operated by her daughter, Marlee, and son-in-law, Franz Ranacher. 7,000 head of Brahman stock graze on Bullo’s seemingly boundless plains, but it’s what lives in the Bullo & Victoria Rivers that will interest keen sport fishers.

Mighty barramundi, occasionally topping 50 pounds, are found throughout the waterways and it’s the prospect of tangling with these spectacular and hard-fighting fish that consistently draws angling die-hards. Your guides have many years’ experience on Bullo River and they consistently put clients on to big barra in beautiful surroundings. Fishing by helicopter is an option at Bullo River and although it’s an extra cost, it provides ready access to some of the waterway’s more remote locations. The view of Bullo’s vastness from a chopper is truly breath taking and comes highly recommended.

If you’re into exciting fishing in an untouched piece of Aussie outback, the Bullo River experience is one not be missed. Marlee and Franz Ranacher welcome discerning travellers to Bullo River on an all inclusive basis only. You will be treated to their renowned outback hospitality and will feel like family friends rather than tourists.

Suggested fishing equipment;

You will be trolling and casting lures, as well as live baiting, so it pays to be well prepared in the tackle department. It’s desirable to pack:

  • A good quality 8-10kg baitcaster or threadline outfit. Braided line is preferable, but not imperative
  • 60 pound monofilament leader material (SureCatch Hi Tensile or Jinkai are good)
  • A selection of shallow running and deep diving hard bodied lures, fizzers and soft plastics (ask your tackle retailer for advice if you’re unsure)
  • A selection of live bait hooks in the 2/0-6/0 range
  • Sharp nosed pliers
  • Knife
  • Swivels
  • A 10 weight fly outfit with slow sinking line.

Included in the Bullo River experience is very comfortable air conditioned accommodation (individual rooms with en suite shower/bathroom facilities), first class meals, wines, beer, soft drink and Guided fishing (and other activities). There’s even a pool adjacent to the accommodation block for a cooling dip at day’s end. Please note, limited tackle is provided and we recommend that you bring your preferred fishing equipment.

To get to Bullo River Station you will need to make your own arrangements to Darwin or Kununurra. The best way to access Bullo River Station is by a private charter plane. The flight takes approximately 1.5 hours from Darwin, Northern Territory, or 30 minutes from Kununurra, Western Australia. Upon arriving in Darwin or Kununurra you simply need to make your way to the Air Charter office at the General Aviation Terminal in Darwin or Kununurra for your scenic charter to Bullo River Station. We can make your charter flight arrangements for you.
